About the Commission

The Landscape and Shade Tree Commission serves various functions to improve the urban forest and trees within the public right-of-way. In accordance with the First Class Township Code, all trees in the public right-of-way are regulated by the Landscape and Shade Tree Commission through the provisions of South Whitehall Township Ordinance 330 TreesMany of these actions are carried out through a designated Township Shade Tree Coordinator.

Any property owner wishing to remove or conduct major pruning to a tree within the public right-of-way must first obtain a Shade Tree Permit. This is a free permit and is required to ensure the safety and well-being of the public and trees in the right-of-way. All Shade Tree Permits are reviewed and inspected by the Township Shade Tree Coordinator and Public Works Department. Please note that the removal of a Shade Tree may require a replacement tree be planted in a nearby location.

Members of the Landscape and Shade Tree Commission review land development plans and provide recommendations to the landscaping proposed in the public right-of-way. The Landscape and Shade Tree Commission also serves as a quasi-judicial body that reviews appeals to Shade Tree Permit denials or conditions of approval.

More information on Shade Trees including permit applications can be found on The Tree Page.
